Teachers have traditionally used predictable or leveled books when teaching young children to learn to read. However, these books typically provide very few opportunities for students to apply the letter-sound relationships and rules they learn in their phonics lessons.

Decodable books, which are books in which most words can be identified using phonics elements, can provide opportunities for students to practice their decoding skills as well as fluency practice.

Geodes® are a type of decodable book that seeks to provide emerging and developing readers with an opportunity to build knowledge and vocabulary while practicing foundational reading skills. Geodes are part of themed units that correspond with the Wit and Wisdom reading curriculum and Fundations® systematic and explicit phonics curriculum.

In partnership with Great Minds and NYCPS District 15, we are interested to find out how Geodes work in first-grade classrooms, and how teachers like using them as part of their reading program.
