Teachers have traditionally used predictable or leveled books when teaching young children to learn to read. However, these books typically provide very few opportunities for students to apply the letter-sound relationships and rules they learn in their phonics lessons.     

Geodes® are a type of decodable book that seeks to provide emerging and developing readers with an opportunity to build knowledge and vocabulary while practicing foundational reading skills. Geodes are part of themed units that correspond with the Wit and Wisdom reading curriculum and Fundations® systematic and explicit phonics curriculum.

In partnership with Great Minds and NYCPS District 15, we have investigated how Geodes can work in first-grade classrooms, and how teachers can effectively incorporate them into their reading program.

Our projects show exciting results on the effects of Geodes on reading fluency and comprehension. Please find below our newest working papers:
