WASH, RINSE, AND
LEARNING ABOUT LITERACY IN THE LAUNDROMAT
In partnership with the Clinton Foundation's Too Small to Fail and the LaundryCares foundation, we evaluated the coalition's Literacy in Laundromat program. The coalition's initiative placed "Laundry and Literacy Kits" in laundromats with the intention of increasing parent-child talk. The kits included an assortment of children's books, blocks, puppets, magnets, crayons, and color/activity sheets. In three laundromats in New York City, we conducted a two-phase pilot study of these spaces. We are currently conducting a larger-scale evaluation of this same initiative in Chicago, IL.
"Laundromats might not seem like the right places for literacy programs, but in many communities, they are emerging as the right spaces to enhance children's opportunity to learn."
