LEARNING ABOUT LITERACY IN THE LAUNDROMAT

The Premise

In partnership with the Clinton Foundation's Too Small to Fail and the LaundryCares foundation, we evaluated the coalition's Literacy in Laundromat program. The coalition's initiative placed "Laundry and Literacy Kits" in laundromats with the intention of increasing parent-child talk. The kits included an assortment of children's books, blocks, puppets, magnets, crayons, and color/activity sheets. We conducted evaluations of literacy spaces in laundromats in New York City, Chicago and Philadelphia.

"Laundromats might not seem like the right places for literacy programs, but in many communities, they are emerging as the right spaces to enhance children's opportunity to learn."
